Reuse the infrastructure
Research rooms already had database-backed identity and realtime channels. Yjs updates are batched for 50 ms, merged, broadcast, and followed by full-state sync for new participants.

Different documents, different guarantees
Research notes and drawings share CRDT state. Standard documents remain whole-block broadcast with last-writer-wins behavior. Naming that distinction is more useful than flattening both into “collaborative editing.”

Peer media has a shape
Native WebRTC handles camera, microphone, screen sharing, and track replacement through a peer mesh. Without TURN or an SFU, this is not a claim of reliable large-room infrastructure—and the interface should not imply otherwise.
